Apparently, a transcription error had occurred in a report that had been radioed into Sasebo from Naha on February 27, 1944 — just a couple of days after the Grayback had returned to base for the final time during World War II. A Nakajima B5N bomber that had taken off from an aircraft carrier launched an attack on the target, according to the relevant Japanese statement.
