Anybody found training their horse in the incorrect way was immediately punished by Genghis Khan. In his view, the only way to control a horse during battle was to gain full control of it in the time leading up to the confrontation. Troops were required to bond with their horses, often having to do so with multiple steeds at the same time. There was no room for error here, as horses were central to Khan’s strategies.
