But There Was No Predator Anywhere
About twenty minutes later, Davis and Miller arrived with wildlife tracking gear and air horns. The three rangers spread out around the meadow, carefully checking for tracks, fresh kills, broken brush, scent marks, and signs of a mountain lion in the trees. They searched every likely place a predator could have hidden.

They found nothing. No prints in the mud. No damaged brush. No signs of a bear or mountain lion anywhere nearby. Davis walked back toward Mark and said there was no trace of a predator. Yet in the middle of the field, the sheep were still running in the same tight circle, refusing to scatter or calm down. Mark stared at the exhausted herd, confused. None of it made sense. Finally, he suggested moving the animals to the old timber barn near the creek so they could get them out of the open meadow.
