The motley crew of British, American, and Canadian troops that would make up the bulk of the Allies’ fighting forces could never have predicted what kind of explosive hell they were headed for. The campaign ran a day late, beginning June 6, due to poor weather conditions. Dwight Eisenhower would address the millions of young men, saying, “You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you.”
