Femininity, sensuality, and fertility have traditionally been linked with long hair. Growing out one’s hair is not just a matter of aesthetics, but also of spiritual significance for Indian women. Akanksha Yadav, an Indian woman with about ten-foot-long locks, set a world record with her hairstyle.

According to some Hindu groups, the hair is grown out and then offered to a temple as a kind of spiritual sacrifice. In accordance with a tradition known as kesh, many Sikh men do not cut their hair because they believe it is God’s creation and must not be altered.
