Sint-Pietersberg in Netherlands

While the Sint-Pietersberg region might not be as commonly known to foreigners, the Caves of Maastricht, which are located in this area of the Netherlands, are a popular tourist attraction. The pure fact that the caves exist is a miracle of sorts, largely because more than a third of the country is located below sea level. This underground structure is unique as the caves are filled with years and years of important history. Initially dug to be used as mines, the caves would eventually become a prominent storage shelter for World War II supplies, as well as providing the resistance with a space to safely store their artillery.

Odessa in Ukraine

Odessa, which is located off the coast of the Black Sea, is a frequently visited summer tourist destination in Ukraine. The weather is not the only drawcard for visitors, who are often more interested in what they can find beneath the scenic city. The Odessa Catacombs, a labyrinth-like network of over a thousand tunnels, are an explorers dream. Dating back to the 1700’s, the tunnels were constructed to house USSR-organised Ukranian rebel groups during World War II. While post-war life in Odessa is far more uneventful, the tunnels continue to serve as a reminder of the former hardships faced by the families from the region.
