Barcelona is renowned for being one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The city might be right in heritage and culture, but few people know about its late 1920’s built underground shopping center called Avinguda de la Llum. At the time it was constructed there were relatively few underground shopping complexes in Europe. At the height of its operations, the mall saw 60 000 visitors each day. As time wore on and consumer pockets tightened, the mall began to face hard times, and maintenance started to dwindle. It closed altogether in 1990, and is now just a memory etched in the mind of Spaniards from the region.
