Jurong Island in Singapore plays host to one of the most unique modern rock caverns in the history of the world. Caverns are typically used as oil depots, and the Jurong rock caverns are the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. The cavern is 150 meters below the surface of the earth, spans nearly 10 kilometers in tunnels and cost almost $700 million US to complete. In construction for an undisclosed time, it officially opened on 2 September 2014. Whether it is there to serve economic reasons or as the perfect doomsday bunker in a political crisis, the Jurong rock caverns have earned their way into the history books already.

Intended to be a second Jerusalem by the Christian king Lalibela, the visionary behind the construction, it contains more than ten interconnected churches that have been carved into the rocks.
