Courtney Thorne-Smith as Lyndsey McElroy | Then
Getting back to sketchy familial boundaries, Alan starts a long term relationship with son Jake’s best friend’s mother. Lindsay’s story arc lasted for most of season seven, with her and Alan undergoing a tumultuous routine of break up and reunion. Her drinking was a problem in their relationship and offered to show writers an opportunity to communicate a message on the challenges of alcoholism and the strain it puts on relationships. An opportunity they did not take. Lindsay ends up hooking up with Walden and the whole thing plays out with the show’s signature lack of self-awareness and a laugh track to let us know when there was meant to be a joke.
