Another character who played a deeper role in the lives of the main characters, Berta appeared in every season of Two and a Half Men. Cast as Charlie’s outspoken and dismissive maid, she held a presence of authority that went a long way to redeem some of the misogyny of the show. In conjunction with the character of Evelyn Harper, she played a maternal figure in Alan and Charlie’s lives. The juxtaposition of these two relationships seeing her as the more nurturing despite her brash dismissal of their hijinx. The character was frequently used to emphasize the thematic point that ‘boys will be boys’.
