Varosha, Cyprus

Up to the year 1974, the seaside resort town of Varosha in Cyprus was known for its vivacious nightlife, which attracted celebrities such as Brigitte Bardot and Elizabeth Taylor. After the level of tension between Turkey and Greece reached its peak in 1974, Turkish forces invaded the region. To this day, the town has not been recaptured in any way, and trespassers run the danger of being shot by Turkish military personnel.
